Google Ads or Meta Ads: where should you start?

A simple way to choose based on what your customers are doing when they find you.

In short

  • Google Ads catches people who are already searching for what you sell. Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) create demand in people who are not searching yet.
  • If customers search for you when they have a problem, start with Google. If they buy because something looks good or new, start with Meta.
  • Plan for a test budget of at least $20 to $50 a day for 4 to 6 weeks before you judge results.
  • Most growing businesses end up using both: Meta to find people, Google to catch them when they are ready.

The one big difference

The easiest way to understand it: Google Ads answers a question. Meta ads start a conversation.

Google AdsSomeone types "emergency plumber near me" or "accounting software for small business". They want it now. Your ad appears right at that moment.
Meta adsSomeone is scrolling Instagram or Facebook. They were not looking for you, but your ad shows them something they want. You create the need.

Neither is "better". They catch people at different moments in the buying journey.

Start with Google Ads if…

  • People search for your service when they have a problem (dentist, lawyer, repairs, B2B software)
  • Your customers compare options before they buy
  • You sell a service that is hard to show in a photo
  • A single customer is worth a lot to you, so a higher cost per click is fine

Start with Meta ads if…

  • Your product looks great in a photo or short video (food, fashion, beauty, real estate, events)
  • People do not know they need it until they see it
  • You can describe your ideal customer by age, interests or location
  • You want to reach a lot of people at a lower cost per view

How much should you spend?

Your ad budget is paid directly to Google or Meta. As a starting point for a small business:

  • Test budget: at least $20 to $50 a day on one platform, for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Why 4 to 6 weeks: both platforms need time and data to learn who your buyers are. Judging after 3 days usually leads to the wrong decision.
  • Measure the right thing: cost per lead and cost per customer, not clicks or likes.

Rule of thumb: work out what one new customer is worth to you. If you can win one for less than that, scale up. If not, fix the offer, the ad or the landing page before you spend more.

Common mistakes that waste money

  • Sending ads to your home page. Send people to a page made for that one offer, with one clear action.
  • Choosing the wrong campaign type on Meta. A campaign built for likes brings likes, not buyers. Choose leads or sales.
  • Broad keywords on Google. "Shoes" is expensive and vague. "Women's running shoes size 38" is cheaper and ready to buy.
  • No tracking. Without conversion tracking, you cannot tell which ads bring customers.
  • Slow follow-up. A lead that waits a day goes cold. Reply in minutes.

When to use both

Once one platform is bringing customers at a good cost, adding the other usually brings more. A common setup that works well:

  1. Meta finds new people with a short video or offer.
  2. They visit your site but do not buy yet.
  3. Google catches them later when they search for your name or service.
  4. Both remind them with a gentle follow-up ad until they are ready.

Questions people ask

Is Google Ads more expensive than Meta ads?

Clicks on Google usually cost more, because the person is already searching to buy. But the cost per customer can be lower, because those leads are often ready to act. Compare cost per customer, not cost per click.

Can I run ads with a small budget?

Yes. Start on one platform with $20 to $50 a day, target a small area or audience, and send people to a focused landing page. Add budget once you see a good cost per lead.

How long until ads bring results?

You can get clicks on the first day. Reliable, cost-effective results usually take 4 to 6 weeks, while the platforms learn and you test ads and offers.

Do I need a website to run ads?

Meta can collect leads with a form inside Facebook or Instagram. For Google, and for better results on both, a fast landing page made for the offer works much better.
